Education at Kids Ark

Kids Ark runs two pre-schools and one primary school.

Pre-schoolers graduate after two years and continue on through our primary school. We currently teach to grade 4, and to grade 6 by 2013.  We use the national curriculum, teaching in both Tetun and Portuguese.

All our teachers are Timorese, assisted at times by our other full time staff.

Teacher training

Kids Ark is a member of TaLiHa, a network of 11 non government pre-schools.

TaLiHa (Tau Liman Hamutuk) is loosely translated as ‘putting hands together’.  This network offers a structured training program to offer accredited training for member teachers.

Visting volunteer teachers

During school holidays Kids Ark often receives volunteers from overseas, to help train our teachers in both primary and pre-school.  Sisters from the Mary MacKillop East Timor Mission have also assisted with teacher training in our school.

Laptop technology

Kids Ark has been donated a class set of laptops specifically designed for children - through the One Laptop per Child network

Our teachers now use these laptops for extra curricular Mathematics, reading and writing.  The laptops are internet capable so we look forward the world coming to Hera.

Preschool graduation

After two years of preschool education, the children graduate to first grade.  The locals love a time to celebrate, and they do just this in their formal graduation gowns.

Celebrating Culture

Independence day on May 20th is an important date in the history of East Timor.  The school prepares a concert each year.
